Lyrics

[Verse 1]
Baby, you know that I love you
I can't tell if you're mine
When you talk it's so pretty
When you smile it's so fine
You don't won't have to give it
Don't wanna make you have to
I've been working my head 'round
How I'm getting with you

[Pre-Chorus]
Heart skip insecure
Long distance lover
I've been here before
And you told my cover

[Chorus]
You are the one, you are the one, you are the one
And I'm needin' ya
You are the one, you are the one, you are the one

[Post-Chorus]
My long distance love
My long distance love
My long distance love

[Verse 2]
Baby, you know when it's special
Do the telephone lies?
I send all the right pictures
When it's been a long time
Hotel nights can get lonely
Hotel bars when you check
All the skirts at your table
Don't you ever forget

[Pre-Chorus]
Heart skip insecure
Long distance lover
I've been here before
And you told my cover

[Chorus]
You are the one, you are the one, you are the one
And I'm needin' ya
You are the one, you are the one, you are the one

[Post-Chorus]
My long distance love
My long distance love
My long distance love

[Bridge]
Honey, don't do me wrong, showed up to find you're gone
Are you with someone else tonight?
Distance was killing me, thought how surprised you'd be
I hope we make sweet love after we fight (yeah, yeah)
After we fight (yeah, yeah)

[Pre-Chorus]
Heart skip insecure
Long distance lover
I've been here before
And I told my cover

[Chorus]
You are the one, you are the one, you are the one
And I'm needin' ya
You are the one, you are the one, you are the one

[Post-Chorus]
My long distance love
My long distance love
My long distance love

Background

Long Distance Lover was first revealed when a snippet of the song leaked on September 5th 2021, followed by the full song later on September 7th.

Writing and development

Long Distance Lover was likely written and recorded during the studio sessions for Dedicated, with elements of the song being borrowed across Disco Darling and Window. The hook, 'you are the one, you are the one' used in all three songs had been 'carried around for a while,' Jepsen states; she wasn't sure of where to put it. [1] It had been written into a number of different songs previously, with Jepsen ultimately finding it worked well as the bridge to Window and seeing its eventual release on Dedicated Side B.

The bridge of Long Distance Lover was additionally reworked from the original chorus of unreleased song Cup of Tea, performed live by Jepsen in 2011.
