Lyrics[]

Verse 1
Truth is I never thought of us together
You're just a friend of mine
We should know better, this can't last forever
But kiss me one more time

Pre-Chorus
Romance is fine
Pour me some wine
Tell me it's just for the fun of it
Thoughts in your eyes
Hard to deny, but
I don't want love, don't want none of it

Chorus
If you want to, you can stay the night
I don't want to be the one, the one
If you want to, you can hold me tight
I don't want to be the one, the one

Post-Chorus
It's too much pressure
It's too much pressure
It's too much pressure
I don't want to be the one, the one

Verse 2
While cookin' dinner, I'd wear your socks and slippers
It's been a long, long day
It's just so easy
Love the way you read me
I never have to say

Pre-Chorus
Romance is fine
Pour me some wine
Tell me it's just for the fun of it
Thoughts in your eyes
Hard to deny but
I don't want love, don't want none of it

Chorus
If you want to, you can stay the night
I don't want to be the one, the one
If you want to, you can hold me tight
I don't want to be the one, the one

Post-Chorus
It's too much pressure
It's too much pressure
It's too much pressure
I don't want to be the one, the one

Bridge
Don't fall in love, fall in love, fall in love, fall in love
Don't fall in love, fall in love, fall in love, fall in love
Don't fall in love, fall in love, fall in love, fall in love
Don't fall in love, fall in love, fall in love, fall in love

Chorus
If you want to, you can stay the night
I don't want to be the one, the one
If you want to, you can hold me tight
I don't want to be the one, the one

Post-Chorus
It's too much pressure
It's too much pressure
It's too much pressure
I don't want to be the one, the one

Writing and development[]

The One was was written by Jepsen alongside Kyle Shearer and Nate Campany, in August 2014, during the development of Emotion. [1] Carly stated that it was one of her favourite writing sessions for the album. [2]

Jepsen discussed writing the song in a March 2015 interview with MTV. At the time, she wasn't sure that the song would make the cut for the album; though, she explained, "It was so empowering to take on the point, 'if you want you can stay the night, but I don’t want to be the one.' I think from a girl’s perspective thats rarely sung about and it’s like, girls feel that way too sometimes. I had fun stretching my limitations of what I thought people want to hear and more of what I feel sometimes and putting it to music." [2]
