Jepsen was signed to Interscope and School Boy Records in February 2012 under Scooter Braun. Following the domestic release of Call Me Maybe in 2011, the song was heard on Canadian radio by Justin Bieber, who brought international attention to the song and to Jepsen for the first time.

Up until then, the song had only been released in Canada. A joint record deal was formed between Jepsen's Canadian record label, 604 Records, with Interscope and School Boy Records, to oversee the global distribution of the song and Jepsen's music, under Scooter Braun.

At the time of her signing, Jepsen was set to release her second full-length studio album, titled Curiosity, exclusively in Canada. It was instead decided by Braun that Call Me Maybe needed time to grow, and a full-length album release was postponed to late 2012. As a result, the Curiosity album was scrapped.

Work began on Kiss around April 2012, and the album was given a strict time limit of just four months to meet its planned release date. Development of the album commenced until its deadline in late July 2012, with the album was finalised in August, and then released in September 2012.
