Lyrics

[Verse 1]
I wanna play this for you all the time
I wanna play this for you when you're feeling used and tired
I wanna make the best so you want more
Just let me in your arms
Just let me in your arms
I'll be the magic you won't ever see
You can always rely on me to help you do what you want to do
I wanna be the best you've ever known
Just let me in your arms
Just let me in your arms

[Chorus]
Show me if you want me, if I'm all that
I will be there, I will be your friend
Show me if you want me, if I'm all that
I will be there, I will be your friend

[Verse 2]
I'll be your lighthouse when you're lost at sea
I'll keep my light on, baby
You can always come to me
I wanna be the place you call your home
Just let me in your arms
Just let me in your arms

[Chorus]
Show me if you want me, if I'm all that
I will be there, I will be your friend
Show me if you want me, if I'm all that
I will be there, I will be your friend

[Bridge]
When you need me I will never let you come apart
When you need me I will be your candle in the dark
When you need someone, oh, let me be the one
The only one, and the only one, and the only one

[Chorus]
Show me if you want me, if I'm all that (all that)
I will be there, I will be your friend
Show me if you want me, if I'm all that (all that)
I will be there, I will be your friend

[Breakdown]
Show me if you want me, if I'm all that (I will be there)
I will be there, I will be your friend
Show me if you want me, if I'm all that (I will be there)
I will be there, I will be your friend

[Chorus]
(Show me if you want me)
Show me if you want me, if I'm all that
(And I will be your friend)
I will be there, I will be your friend
(Show me if you want me)
Show me if you want me, if I'm all that
(And I will be your friend)
I will be there, I will be your friend
(Show me if you want me)
Show me if you want me, if I'm all that
(Show me if you care)
I will be there, I will be your friend
(Show me if you want me - hey!)
Show me if you want me, if I'm all that
(Show me that you care)
I will be there, I will be your friend
(Show me that you care)
I will be there, I will be your friend
(Oh, show me that you care)
I will be there, I will be your friend
Just show me if you care

Writing and development

The original demo of All That was produced almost entirely by Dev Hynes, who Jepsen had been eager to collaborate with after being familiar with his previous work with Solange. Hynes was initially sceptical of Jepsen's enthusiasm but was won over by her ability and work ethic. [3]

Jepsen described the first session with Hynes as 'nerve-wrecking' because she was 'desperate to prove herself.' The pair would workshop the original All That demo between Jepsen's Cinderella Broadway performances across a number of studio sessions in early-to-mid 2014. Hynes explained, 'In my original version of that song, the bridge didn’t have any vocals and she was like, ‘There need to be vocals there,’ and she wrote that vocal line. It’s one of my favourite bits.' [3][4]

Ariel Rechtshaid similarly co-wrote and co-produced the song, and upon hearing it for the first time, made the suggestion to speed it up by three or four beats per minute. Jepsen recollected that, 'Ariel was like, ‘Guys, I really like what you’re doing with this slow jam, but I find myself looking at people in the room to be like, 'When’s the next beat gonna happen?' So he helped us to make it appropriately slow.' [3]

In January 2015, Jepsen posted to Instagram that had recorded 'one of her favourite songs' that day with Hynes and Rechtshaid. It's very likely that this song was All That, in its final stages of production. [5]

Announcement and release

All That was debuted live by Jepsen alongside Hynes and Rechtshaid on Saturday Night Live on April 5th 2015. After the performance, Jepsen officially announced the song as her next single and it was immediately made available to purchase on iTunes and uploaded to YouTube. [6][1]

Live performances

Saturday Night Live

When Jepsen received word of her aforementioned performance on Saturday Night Live, she immediately wanted to get both producers of the track involved. She stated, 'As soon as I got the call, I texted both of them and was like, 'Boys, I’m playing Saturday Night Live and I want you to come and play with me. Are you guys down?' [3]

Hynes recollected a slightly different play of events, stating '[Carly] texted me like, 'Hey. If you don’t mind, I’m going on SNL and it would be amazing if you and Ariel played. It’s cool if not. I totally get it.' I was like, ‘What are you talking about? Of course I would do that!' [3]
