Lyrics[]

Verse 1
Hold on now
This is getting kinda serious
This is getting kinda out of control
Out of control
Slow down now
Breathing heavy, when it's just a kiss
This is getting kinda out of my hands
Out of my hands

Pre-Chorus
Please don't go, look real close
Eyes that show kaleidoscopes

Chorus
When I'm close to you
We blend into my favourite colour
I'm bright baby blue falling into you
Falling for each other
When I'm close to you
We blend into my favourite colour
I'm bright baby blue falling into you
Falling for each other

Verse 2
Should I stay?
Making love until the morning light
Making out like it's the end of the world
And I really wanna get it right
But it's getting hard to slow down now
Got me feeling like it's real for sure
This is getting kinda out of my head
I'm out of my head
'Cause

Chorus
When I'm close to you
We blend into my favourite colour
I'm bright baby blue falling into you
Falling for each other
When I'm close to you
We blend into my favourite colour
I'm bright baby blue falling into you
Falling for each other

Bridge
Paint me up, me up, me up
You're my favourite colour
Paint me up, me up, me up
You're my favourite colour
Paint me up, me up, me up
You're my favourite colour
Paint me up, me up, me up

Pre-Chorus
Please don't go, look real close
(Paint me up, me up, me up)
Eyes that show kaleidoscopes
(Paint me up, me up, me up)

Chorus
When I'm close to you
We blend into my favourite colour
I'm bright baby blue falling into you
Falling for each other
When I'm close to you
We blend into my favourite colour
I'm bright baby blue falling into you
Falling for each other

Outro
Paint me up, me up, me up
You're my favourite colour
Paint me up, me up, me up
You're my favourite colour
Paint me up, me up, me up
You're my favourite colour
Paint me up, me up, me up
You're my favourite colour

Writing and development[]

Development between 2011 - 2013[]

Favourite Colour was initially written by Jepsen during Curiosity sessions in 2011, sometime after the original demo of I Didn’t Just Come Here to Dance. Jepsen states it's a song she's had 'for the longest time', and also revealed that the song was originally titled Baby Blue. [2]

Based on a Tweet made by Jepsen in October 2013, it appears Favourite Colour was further reworked after Curiosity for Jepsen's then-upcoming third studio album - when asked about a hint for the project, she stated it was a 'bright baby blue' colour in reference to the song. Bright Baby Blue appears to be an additional working title of the song based on Jepsen's wording. [3]

Rework for Emotion[]

Jepsen states Favourite Colour went between 'six and eight' different productions during its development, before landing on the final version that made it onto Emotion. She stated that, previously, 'it was a little too this or a little too that' and wasn't satisfied with its direction. The final version of the song was developed alongside production duo Mattman & Robin, whom Jepsen was introduced to in 2014. [4][2] Jepsen credited collaborator Devonte Hynes with finding a home for the song, stating he had requested it to be included on the album. [2]

Themes and lyricism[]

According to Jepsen, Favourite Colour is about sexual intimacy. She states that the time of writing the song, she was 'so extremely in love' and explained, 'I turned myself into a little hippie and just that feeling, like we almost like blurred the lines and blended into each other, that happened whenever we made love. It just all of a sudden felt like I forgot myself, and it was lovely.' [2]

When asked about now she came up with the song's title, Jepsen responded, 'I think I was just trying to describe intimacy to me. The first thing that came to me was a colour, like I feel like I’m blended into somebody when it’s really right, and baby blue is my favourite colour, so it kind of all worked out.' [4]
